The active ingredients in cannabis are called cannabinoids. There are many cannabinoids synthesized by the plant including tetrahydrocannabinol, cannabinol, cannabidiol, cannabinolidic acid, cannabigerol, and cannabichromene. Cannabis is the most durable of the hemp plants, and it produces the toughest cloth, called `canvas.' The cannabis plant also produces three other very important products which the other hemp plants do not; seed, pulp, and medicine.

It is often said and posted in propaganda ads that Marijuana contains over 400 chemicals. In reality, most organic compounds like plants, are composed of hundreds, if not thousands of chemicals. There is nothing unusual about this high number. To the 'average Joe', this makes Marijuana sound like it is some sort of toxic waste.

Is THC Toxic?

The primary active ingredient in marijuana is tetrahydrocannibinol or THC. However, this is somewhat misleading, in that the effects one experiences when sampling marijuana are derrived from a rainbow of canniboid halluncinogens and intoxicants, all related to but not exactly the same as THC. As plants tend to formulate compounds in wildly varying amounts, one cannot know how much THC or other active ingredients -- if any -- will be delivered from one plant, one leaf, etc.

Turning towards studies that used pure THC or Drabinol -- synthetic THC, we find that the usual recreational dosage is roughly 10-15mg/kg for a normal human. We also find that the LD50 (Lethal Dose 50%) of THC is 1,270mg/kg for male rats. Doing the arithmetic for humans, we find that it takes about 300gm of pure THC to acheive lethality in 50% of the test cases, which amounts to roughly 30,000 marijuana cigarettes (assuming 10mg per cigarette).

Under the circumstances, we can honestly say that THC and marijuana in general is not toxic to humans at all, and it's no surprise that there are no recorded, substatiated fatalities resulting from marijuana/THC overdose.
